We’re living during a world which inspires a culture of proprietary software. Our youngsters are being taught therefore, too, but they’re partially or totally unaware of free software and the benefits it provides.

On the opposite hand, free software may be a gateway for college kids to explore and learn. this text is devoted to those people that aren’t conscious of the advantages of using free software.

  1. Truly user-oriented

One of proprietary software’s major claims is that free software isn’t user-oriented. A proprietary vendor wont to hear its customers’ needs and respond and develop accordingly. But companies like Red Hat and IBM are crafting strategies that believe all end users having an equivalent needs.

  1. No monopolies

It is easier and cheaper to modify from one free software to a different compared to switching proprietary software. Free software doesn’t tie you right down to any corporation.

  1. Available at minimal cost

Free software doesn’t mean zero cost software. it’s true that the majority current open source projects are available for free of charge of cost, which leads ambiguity round the commonly used term “free software.” therefore the common saying is, “Think free as in free speech (freedom) and not free as in free beer (zero cost).” Free software lowers the assembly cost. Making a system like MS-Windows costs many dollars. But if you produce an equivalent quite system employing a free POSIX version, it might probably cost but 100 dollars.

  1. No imposed upgrades

Free software never disappears like proprietary. If proprietary vendors stop supporting a product, users have two options: either use an unsupported version of the software, or choose an (unwanted) upgrade.

  1. No spying on users

If users haven’t any control over the software they’re using, it can easily spy on their activity. the corporate behind proprietary software often installs features that restrict users from sharing it with others. Since anyone who buys proprietary software must sign a contract before using it, they’re agreeing that the seller has the proper to examine disk drive content all of sudden.

  1. No lock-in standards

Proprietary vendors lock-in proprietary standards to make sure that their users will become returning customers. Free software works in open standards.[1]

As college administrators strive to strike a balance between resources and requirements, open source e-learning software has emerged as a viable solution. Many universities have opted for open source learning management systems, especially.

The main potential drawback of open source projects for education becomes evident during their implementation. Using the software to its full potential may prove challenging for beginners, and therefore the availability of the ASCII text file is irrelevant for end users if they are doing not find the merchandise useful. Also, open source products aren’t always compatible with existing software components.[2]

Richard Stallman once said:

“The initiative in employing a computer was to vow to not help your neighbor. A cooperating community was forbidden. Free software gives users the liberty to review how the program works by accessing the ASCII text file, writing additional code, testing, modifying and distributing it. this stuff are prohibited for proprietary software. [3]

Open source and digital education and learning, separately and together, aim to succeed in everyone. A cohesive plan must compile open source principles and technologies, educational institutions, and economic factors in order that each component’s role is clearly defined. Both open source and digital education projects are taking their first tentative steps into the buyer world. they need an extended thanks to go before they enter the mainstream, but together they need great potential to vary forever the face of education.
